What’s a 40% Error Among Friends?

This ground has been plowed before, but there was an editorial in the Grand Rapids Press last Friday titled “When will Grand Rapids lure a big-league sport?” While we’re content to let the pundits and prognosticators do their thing, it’s disappointing to see the impact and contributions of both the Griffins and Whitecaps glazed over so casually. Even more frustrating is their statement that the Griffins’ average attendance is “about 5,000,” a figure that is off by a mere 40 percent. For the record, the Griffins averaged 7,016 fans during the 2009-10 season – ranking fourth among the AHL’s 29 teams last year – and have averaged a shade under 8,000 (7,930 to be exact) over their first 14 seasons.
