The Afternoon Shift – Sept. 30

Construction is the theme of the day. Work continues on the expansion of Van Andel Arena’s northwest concourse, the installation of the arena’s brand-spankin’ new LED ribbon on the facade of the upper deck, and the formation of the Griffins’ 2010-11 roster.

While nearly every prospective member of the Griffins has had the chance to play with the Red Wings during the preseason, today will mark the first and only time that Curt Fraser’s squad takes to the ice as a team in a game situation prior to its Oct. 8 season opener, as the Griffins host the Lake Erie Monsters in a closed scrimmage at 5 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena. Grand Rapids’ growing roster will be filled out by six players trying out for spots on the AHL club, but the scrimmage (really a regulation game with refs, but without fans or an official scorekeeper) will still give most of the Griffins’ regulars an opportunity to play together under live enemy fire.

Check for updates on tonight’s scrimmage through the Griffins’ Facebook and Twitter pages, and look for a brief recap at griffinshockey.com. The Griffins’ anticipated lines are as follows:

FORWARDS

Tomas Tatar – Jamie Johnson – Ilari Filppula
Robin Richards – Trent Daavettila – Kyle Rogers

Gary Steffes – Ryan Howarth – Jamie Tardif

DEFENSEMEN
