Look up to the west “eyebrow” of Van Andel Arena during a Griffins game and you may see a face that’s familiar and yet somehow out of place: Kirk Maltby.
The four-time Stanley Cup champion declined an opportunity to continue his playing career as a Griffin when he did not make Detroit’s roster during the preseason, instead choosing to retire and become a pro scout for the Red Wings.
Ironically, the former Grind Line member has nonetheless been to a handful of Grand Rapids’ games already this season, keeping a watchful eye on the AHL players of the seven NHL teams to which he’s been assigned.
The Grand Rapids Press’ Steve Vedder caught up to Maltby at a game last month, while Red Wings TV posted this new interview with him from a recent contest at The Joe, in which he provides a glimpse into his new career off the ice.
