The Afternoon Shift – Dec. 13

The Griffins received a pleasant surprise last Wednesday when defenseman Jakub Kindl was assigned by the Detroit Red Wings for conditioning. He helped the Griffins to a 3-2 home win over Milwaukee in his season debut that night, while his two-assist performance on Sunday – a key part of Grand Rapids’ 4-2 comeback victory against visiting Texas – put him on the cusp of a distinction that only one other blueliner in franchise history can claim.

Kindl has now registered 74 assists in a Griffins uniform, putting him one shy of breaking into the team’s top 10 all time in that category. (Tomas Kopecky and Ed Patterson are tied for ninth with 75 assists apiece.) The only other defenseman to reside among the elite is, of course, the one and only Travis Richards, who ranks second in team history with 182 helpers.

Should he stick around for the maximum stint, Kindl will have three chances this week to record that landmark assist, starting on Wednesday when the Houston Aeros visit Van Andel Arena at 7 p.m.
