With the NHL’s all-star break upon us, and in light of the returns of Cory Emmerton and Jan Mursak to Grand Rapids today, it’s a good time to take a look at how the Griffins’ 37 alumni have fared in the NHL this season.

Five of them – Emmerton, Mursak, Tomas Tatar and Jakub Kindl from Detroit, and Tampa Bay’s Mattias Ritola – have recorded their first NHL goals. Other first-half highlights include:

  • Detroit’s Valtteri Filppula, who paces all Griffins grads with 12 goals this season, is tied for 18th in the NHL with a 16.4 shooting percentage;
  • Ville Leino leads all alumni in scoring with 36 points for Philadelphia, while tying Sidney Crosby for 12th in the league with a plus-20 rating;
  • Tomas Kopecky’s 31 points place him fourth on defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago;
  • Jimmy Howard’s sparkling 24-8-3 record for Detroit ties him for second in the league in wins.

In addition, Griffins alumni have played key roles for three of the NHL’s six current division leaders – Detroit, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay – providing a favorable forecast for the continuation of a remarkable streak. A Grand Rapids alumnus has had his name engraved on the Stanley Cup each of the last three years (2008-10) and five times in the last six seasons.

So, without further ado, here’s the statistical recap for the Griffins’ NHL alumni (bold = has played for Grand Rapids this season):
