The Afternoon Shift – Feb. 23

Many thanks to the more than 400 fans who came out to Griff’s IceHouse last night for the Grand Rapids Sled Wings’ annual annihilation of the Grand Rapids Griffins in sled hockey. As much as we’d like to think the 11-1 final score wasn’t indicative of the closeness of the game, it was.

Led by U.S. National Junior Sled Team members Tyler Anderson and Chris Melton, the Sled Wings jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one period, chasing starting “goaltender” Jamie Tardif in favor of Derek Meech, then built an 8-0 cushion in the second before Doug Janik finally put the Griffins on the board. The Sled Wings then tacked on a field goal before, ahem, holding on for their fourth consecutive win in the event.

Take heart, Griffins! They can never take your 2006-07 victory away from you, no matter how badly they beat you (and they just might keep exacting revenge for it in perpetuity). Plus, your participation helped raise just over $5,000 for the Griffins Youth Foundation and the Sled Wings.

For those who want to relive this awesome evening, as well as those who were unable to attend, check out the no-holds-barred story on MLive and the Griffins’ photo gallery on Facebook.
